Culture shock is a perfectly normal but inevitable part of the adjustment process whenever a person enters a new culture. If you are going to spend more than a few weeks in any French-speaking country, with these 5 important forget-me-nots you can minimize the signs of culture shock such as the feeling of homesickness, frustration, alienation, resentment and anger to name a few, to help you through the phases of feeling comfortable when living abroad.
 
1. Communication Breakdown: You should learn French online simply because it is convenient and caters to the individual. Communication is paramount when it comes to getting to know and to feel more comfortable in your new surroundings. This is true for both adults and children. Observe constantly and do not hesitate to ask questions about things you are not sure about, you will be appreciated more for being open to learning and respecting their social manners.

4. Time Is On Your Side: Give yourself time to observe and discover how the French themselves deal with the routines of daily living. No doubt there will be things you had back home you do not have here, especially your family and network of friends. But rest assured that when you return back to normal life at home, you will see how much you have gained from experiencing other ways of dealing with these necessities of life.

5. Birds Of A Feather Flock Together: Find comfort with fellow expatriates. Because expats have gone through the same process of adaptation, they can be a good source of advice and comfort to help you assimilate into the culture more quickly. You can find clubs and organizations in France, for example, where you can speak English or whatever other mother tongue you may have.

Learn French fluently and get the most out of the time you have there to accumulate memorable experiences and make life-long friends. It is obviously much easier to survive, adjust, and integrate into French society if you speak French. IF you have decided that you want to learn French, we wanted to share with you a few tips that will make your mission a lot easier. We came up with key tips that are sure to make your quest more exciting and hopefully will help you grasp the language a lot quicker.

Whatever your reason for picking up the French language, there’s probably a certain level of intimidation that you feel. Many of the students we speak with feel that they are embarking on an impossible journey and that it will take them years to actually be able to speak a new language.

Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be the case. Although many of the schools and courses rely on out-of-date methods that make learning French seem like a chore, there are now some superb self-study courses that use a wide variety of learning methods that have been developed by psychologists and proven to cut your learning time by over 300%.

Although you might be tempted to enroll in a class at a school or go to a private tutor, this typically won’t deliver the results you are looking for. Most classes focus far too heavily on the reading and writing component as opposed to actually being able to speak the language.

This is frustrating to many students as their first and foremost goal is to be able to actually speak the language. Your best bet is to find a self-study program that lets you learn on your own time and that focuses on making you conversational in French.

Here are three tips to further enhance your learning experience:

1) Like you mom always said, make sure to listen!

It’s amazing how much your mind will pick up just by listening to another language. Even though you don’t necessarilly understand everything, there’s still a huge benefit in listening to other people converse in French. You get a better idea of the "flow" of the language and gradually you will also pick up new terms and the structure of the language.

It’s a good idea to watch a French movie with English subtitles. This lets you hear the language while also knowing exactly what is being said.

One of the students we worked with downloaded a whole season of a French TV program and watched them all. By the end of it, she had improved her French skills drastically and even had a grasp on the slang and nuances of the language.

2) Don’t OVER-practice

I’m sure you have heard the saying "practice makes perfect". And although it’s true in many regards, one of the key reasons that people give up learning a language is because it begins to feel like too much of a chore and boring routine.

You want to vary the ways you practice and do what it takes to keep your motivation level up. Don’t set a strict "learning schedule" unless you learn best that way. Instead, just try to make a point to include some form of French in your day.

This way you are engaging yourself in the language but you don’t feel restricted by any type of schedule.

3) Mix it up! Make sure to vary your practice

Remember, you want to try to include French in you daily routine, but you don’t want to get bored by doing the same thing each day! Mix it up!

You could throw on a French TV or radio program or do a lesson from the course you decided to take part in. Maybe you have a friend that speaks French that you can converse with. Or while you are reading the newspaper, pick a couple of paragraphs and think to yourself how you might translate it into French.

There’s lot of different ways to engage yourself in the language.

This last point is a crucial step in truly learning the language. By varying the way you learn, you are using different parts of your brain which helps you not only learn faster, but retain it much more effectively as well.

This is a big reason for the recent success of some of the online study courses. They do a great job of providing a variety of learning material which keeps students interested while stimulated the brain in the "right way".

Learning French shouldn’t feel like a full-time job – in fact, it can be fun and exicting if you go about it the right way. Find a proven study course, follow the above tips and stick with it! You will find yourself able to speak the language in no time – all the best!

Immersion language courses normally involve the pupil spending time in the country of the language they wish to learn hence the term immersion as you are completly immersed in the language.

Here we will look at the alternatives

A long time ago, the best method to learn French was to spend some time directly in France, Canada or Switzerland.

Today, the Internet is a powerful way to learn French effectively, and you don’t need to spend all this money. You know, airfare, hotels, meals, etc…

You can now become fluent in French (and any other language by the way) without moving from your sweet home! How cool is that?

Let’s compare three different methods…

The first one is your local community class. There are two main disadvantages:

a. Obviously, no native speaker is present in the class..

b. it may be an expensive course

The second method to learn French is a complete immersion

Many people claim that it is the absolute best way to learn a foreign language?

I don’t think so. I’ve seen this in many countries where people speak different languages, and this doesn’t make any difference.

And very often, those who are stronger in the language spent less time in the country and speak better!

The real problem is your "teacher". If you have the right teacher, it doesn’t matter where you are located, you will speak well, no matter the language you are trying to learn.

Another method (I like it) is phone conversations with a native French speaker (via skype for example)

Bottom line is that if you are really motivated, and you have the real teacher, it doesn’t matter where you are learning French.

Rich in history, culture and passion, with a staggering 78 million foreign tourists visiting the nation during 2006 alone, France is a fantastic country to visit, offering a broad range of activities to cater for all tastes and  a perfect opportunity to practise learning the french language.

Learning to speak French is not easy but if you can make it entertaining you will speed up the learning process and you’ll retain more.

When you’re looking to get a good grip on the basic French language the last thing you want is to be bored. What you want is to get to learn a few things quickly. Initial success will encourage you and make you look forward to the next bit of French learning, and the next, and the next. Before you know it you’ve got a good grasp of the French language and the confidence to use it.

So what you’re probably asking now is just how fast can you learn. Of course that depends on you, and the time you can give it, but basic French language can be acquired very quickly if you’ve got the right material. It’s pretty unlikely you’re going to get bored when you’re tested by something that reacts to you, prompts you and stretches you just a little and modern French learning can be just like that.

With all these attributes is it any wonder you can get a grip on the basic French language so quickly?

Of course you might expect there’s a price to pay for this sort of excellent in-depth teaching. That’s a truly remarkable price considering the content available.

Let’s face it, if you want to learn French, you want to learn it fast. With PCs now widely accessible, learning French has never been quicker.

If you’re setting out to learn French you want to do it in the shortest time possible, right? With the least amount of difficulty. That’s only natural. Who wants to sit around leafing through dusty old French textbooks? Nobody. So if you’re looking to learn French fast there’s only one sensible solution and that’s to learn French on your computer.

For a start you’ve got the internet. It’s a huge resource for learning the French language with many sites where you can start to learn absolutely free. A lot of them provide French on MP3 clips so you can actually hear the language. That’s the way you want to learn. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not completely anti-book, but a book can’t speak. How are you going to learn French properly without knowing how it’s spoken?

Here’s an example. If I try to write down how to pronounce the French alphabet you’d get something like this: aah, bay, cay, day, euh, efah – well you can’t do much with that can you? But if I actually speak it to you, if you could actually hear my voice… I think you can see what I mean.

So learning French on your computer is definitely the way forward. The internet can not only give you French MP3s but also on a few sites, like the BBC, video clips as well. These walk you through situations like getting a cab, asking directions, ordering food. Again you’ve got the benefit of hearing spoken French and these videos bring the whole thing to life. They’re entertaining, and if you’re being entertained you learn faster because it all seems so much easier.

You will soon find that you run out of free places online to learn French. After all, most free services are just trying to get you to sign up to some kind of paid service. I don’t think there’s a problem with that, that’s business. If they didn’t get paid we probably wouldn’t have these services at all. Just take advantage of the free French lessons you can find and move on.

The thing is, if you want to continue to learn French fast you’re probably going to have to eventually put your hand in your pocket.

Learning French on your computer is still the way to go though because now we’re moving into software to learn French – and great stuff it is too!

Whether you’re five or ninety-five there’s French software that can help. There’s just as broad a rage of prices too. At the bottom end you tend to get what you pay for, and to be honest although it’s not practical for me to check them all, those I have seen don’t offer a great deal. For $20.00 I’m afraid you don’t get a great deal more that the free stuff.

However, for not a lot more (and certainly way less than a course of private French lessons) there are some amazing programs like Rocket French. This is what learning French on your computer should be like, utilizing all the abilities of your PC. It’s fun, it’s interactive, it’s got games which will provide you with a bit of a challenge and you’ve got French MP3 sound files so you can copy them to a player or a CD and continue to learn while you’re out walking around or in the car maybe.

So much as I like a good book, if you want to learn French fast, with the minimum difficulty, learn French on your computer!

The more particular French food shoppers wind their way through the marketplaces stocked with produce and meats obtained that morning from local farms. Then it’s on to the cheese shop and of course, the boulongerie – the bakery.

French bakery goods are not made with bleached, highly refined flours and do not contain preservatives such as we are accustomed to finding at our grocery stores. Breads are usually baked twice daily, to be consumed that day. The French abhor waste. Dinner may consist of a stew, some crusty bread, with fruit and cheese for dessert. Vegetable soups and salads full of bright, fresh vegetables are other standard menu items in the everyday lineup. Food portions are not large and are eaten in courses, not served up on one plate at once.

French food is enjoyed over a period of time we might consider ridiculously long – a weekend lunch can easily last two or three hours. Conversation is an integral part of the thorough enjoyment of French food. The talk is as good as the food, with long intervals spent appreciating and digesting each dish. The custom of serving each course separately means your hot food doesn’t get cold and the salad stays crisp.

Aside from those fabulous French creations with the mouthwatering rich sauces that accompany them, typical French food is characterized by a predominance of farm-fresh vegetables, fish, poultry and always, bread. So if you think of French food as a once-a-year indulgence, try some dishes of the real French cuisine. When we are tought something new, we continue to be wiser. Therefore, learning about french food has already boosted your brain more than you know.

Learning French is now easier and more accessible then ever. I have put together a list of the top four ways to learn French. Hopefully this will help you choose best possible French tuition option for you.

Learning a new language doesn’t have to take hours each day. You’ll find that most modern language courses understand how busy people are, so they create courses that require less than 20 minutes study time each day. I am sure you could spare 20 minutes a day out of your bust schedule to gain a new valuable skill. These short daily sessions help you retain more information and are a great way to keep you motivated.

Have you ever thought about using your time more effectively? I am sure there are times during you day that you could fit in some extra French tuition. What about during your commute to work? Maybe even during your lunch break? Think about it? Could you squeeze in some extra French tuition into these times? Most modern courses can be purchased in CDs or MP3s formats. All you would need to do is upload the tracks onto your Ipod and take it to work! The last thing any of us want to do when you come home from work – is work some more. If you use your time more wisely you won’t have to.

Have you ever though about teaching yourself to learn French for free? I know it sounds crazy, but it’s easy if you know how. The best way to start is to simply use your ears. Get on-line and listen to some French internet radio stations. The more you listen the more you’ll realise the similarities between English and French. Before you know it you’ll start to understand some of the things they are saying – you’ll be amazed how quickly this will happen. Another great tip is to rent some French movies from your local library. All foreign movies now have English subtitles so it’s understand what’s being said.

If you want to learn French very quickly then you may want to think about one 2 one French tuition. This can be quite expensive, but you will be able to speak and understand French in no time at all. If you are serious about learning another language, and are prepared to pay for it then this is definitely the way to go. A great less expensive alternative is to attend an evening class. You won’t receive the same amount of individual attention, but expect to see some pretty impressive results in a relatively short amount of time.

If you’re setting out to learn French you want to do it in the shortest time possible, right? With the least amount of difficulty. That’s only natural. Who wants to sit around leafing through dusty old French textbooks? Nobody. So if you’re looking to learn French fast there’s only one sensible solution and that’s to learn French on your computer.

For a start you’ve got the internet. It’s a huge resource for learning the French language with many sites where you can start to learn absolutely free. A lot of them provide French on MP3 clips so you can actually hear the language. That’s the way you want to learn. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not completely anti-book, but a book can’t speak. How are you going to learn French properly without knowing how it’s spoken?

Here’s an example. If I try to write down how to pronounce the French alphabet you’d get something like this: aah, bay, cay, day, euh, efah – well you can’t do much with that can you? But if I actually speak it to you, if you could actually hear my voice… I think you can see what I mean.

So learning French on your computer is definitely the way forward. The internet can not only give you French MP3s but also on a few sites, like the BBC, video clips as well. These walk you through situations like getting a cab, asking directions, ordering food. Again you’ve got the benefit of hearing spoken French and these videos bring the whole thing to life. They’re entertaining, and if you’re being entertained you learn faster because it all seems so much easier.

You will soon find that you run out of free places online to learn French. After all, most free services are just trying to get you to sign up to some kind of paid service. I don’t think there’s a problem with that, that’s business. If they didn’t get paid we probably wouldn’t have these services at all. Just take advantage of the free French lessons you can find and move on.

The thing is, if you want to continue to learn French fast you’re probably going to have to eventually put your hand in your pocket.

Learning French on your computer is still the way to go though because now we’re moving into software to learn French – and great stuff it is too!

Whether you’re five or ninety-five there’s French software that can help. There’s just as broad a rage of prices too. At the bottom end you tend to get what you pay for, and to be honest although it’s not practical for me to check them all, those I have seen don’t offer a great deal. For $20.00 I’m afraid you don’t get a great deal more that the free stuff.

However, for not a lot more (and certainly way less than a course of private French lessons) there are some amazing programs like Rocket French. This is what learning French on your computer should be like, utilizing all the abilities of your PC. It’s fun, it’s interactive, it’s got games which will provide you with a bit of a challenge and you’ve got French MP3 sound files so you can copy them to a player or a CD and continue to learn while you’re out walking around or in the car maybe.

So much as I like a good book, if you want to learn French fast, with the minimum difficulty, learn French on your computer!
