IF you have decided that you want to learn French, we wanted to share with you a few tips that will make your mission a lot easier. We came up with key tips that are sure to make your quest more exciting and hopefully will help you grasp the language a lot quicker.

Whatever your reason for picking up the French language, there’s probably a certain level of intimidation that you feel. Many of the students we speak with feel that they are embarking on an impossible journey and that it will take them years to actually be able to speak a new language.

Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be the case. Although many of the schools and courses rely on out-of-date methods that make learning French seem like a chore, there are now some superb self-study courses that use a wide variety of learning methods that have been developed by psychologists and proven to cut your learning time by over 300%.

Although you might be tempted to enroll in a class at a school or go to a private tutor, this typically won’t deliver the results you are looking for. Most classes focus far too heavily on the reading and writing component as opposed to actually being able to speak the language.

This is frustrating to many students as their first and foremost goal is to be able to actually speak the language. Your best bet is to find a self-study program that lets you learn on your own time and that focuses on making you conversational in French.

Here are three tips to further enhance your learning experience:

1) Like you mom always said, make sure to listen!

It’s amazing how much your mind will pick up just by listening to another language. Even though you don’t necessarilly understand everything, there’s still a huge benefit in listening to other people converse in French. You get a better idea of the "flow" of the language and gradually you will also pick up new terms and the structure of the language.

It’s a good idea to watch a French movie with English subtitles. This lets you hear the language while also knowing exactly what is being said.

One of the students we worked with downloaded a whole season of a French TV program and watched them all. By the end of it, she had improved her French skills drastically and even had a grasp on the slang and nuances of the language.

2) Don’t OVER-practice

I’m sure you have heard the saying "practice makes perfect". And although it’s true in many regards, one of the key reasons that people give up learning a language is because it begins to feel like too much of a chore and boring routine.

You want to vary the ways you practice and do what it takes to keep your motivation level up. Don’t set a strict "learning schedule" unless you learn best that way. Instead, just try to make a point to include some form of French in your day.

This way you are engaging yourself in the language but you don’t feel restricted by any type of schedule.

3) Mix it up! Make sure to vary your practice

Remember, you want to try to include French in you daily routine, but you don’t want to get bored by doing the same thing each day! Mix it up!

You could throw on a French TV or radio program or do a lesson from the course you decided to take part in. Maybe you have a friend that speaks French that you can converse with. Or while you are reading the newspaper, pick a couple of paragraphs and think to yourself how you might translate it into French.

There’s lot of different ways to engage yourself in the language.

This last point is a crucial step in truly learning the language. By varying the way you learn, you are using different parts of your brain which helps you not only learn faster, but retain it much more effectively as well.

This is a big reason for the recent success of some of the online study courses. They do a great job of providing a variety of learning material which keeps students interested while stimulated the brain in the "right way".

Learning French shouldn’t feel like a full-time job – in fact, it can be fun and exicting if you go about it the right way. Find a proven study course, follow the above tips and stick with it! You will find yourself able to speak the language in no time – all the best!

Culture shock is a perfectly normal but inevitable part of the adjustment process whenever a person enters a new culture. If you are going to spend more than a few weeks in any French-speaking country, with these 5 important forget-me-nots you can minimize the signs of culture shock such as the feeling of homesickness, frustration, alienation, resentment and anger to name a few, to help you through the phases of feeling comfortable when living abroad.

1. Communication Breakdown: You should learn French online simply because it is convenient and caters to the individual. Communication is paramount when it comes to getting to know and to feel more comfortable in your new surroundings. This is true for both adults and children. When you learn French fluently, you will be able to deal with the day-to-day activities (your system of paying bills, shopping, getting medical help, dealing with transport, administrative affairs, etc) that are apart of our existence. You should also make a conscious effort to observe how French people communicate with each other, in this way you will learn French fast and feel less alienated and more connected.

2. Don’t Know Much About History: You need to complement your French lessons by learning about the country, the people and their culture. By having some history in hand, France and the French will seem less foreign or threatening.

3. Monkey See, Monkey Do: In your environment you should try to mirror the behavior of the French people you want to get to know. For example, never assume that the social etiquette in the workplace among colleagues is the same at your job back home. Observe constantly and do not hesitate to ask questions about things you are not sure about, you will be appreciated more for being open to learning and respecting their social manners.

4. Time Is On Your Side: Give yourself time to observe and discover how the French themselves deal with the routines of daily living. No doubt there will be things you had back home you do not have here, especially your family and network of friends. But rest assured that when you return back to normal life at home, you will see how much you have gained from experiencing other ways of dealing with these necessities of life.

5. Birds Of A Feather Flock Together: Find comfort with fellow expatriates. Because expats have gone through the same process of adaptation, they can be a good source of advice and comfort to help you assimilate into the culture more quickly. You can find clubs and organizations in France, for example, where you can speak English or whatever other mother tongue you may have.

Learn French fluently and get the most out of the time you have there to accumulate memorable experiences and make life-long friends. It is obviously much easier to survive, adjust, and integrate into French society if you speak French. Do not forget these 5 tips and in time and with patience you will find your niche and culture shock will be less of a hindrance and only a small learning curve.

Learning French can be an exciting experience, especially for global travellers. It will surely be fun, especially when you are a native English speaker. Why? It is because most English words and phrases have originated from the French language. But most of all, you want to learn it for advancement.
If you want to get a good and high paying job position, you should know that most of the companies that offer such position require French speaking individuals. If you want to work in another country or state, there might be a need for you to learn French, because there are many areas that use the language.

Nowadays, you can learn French quickly. The internet serves as the number one source of French tutorials in the modern age. With the advent of modern teaching methods, you can actually take your lessons while you are at home, and that will be online. All you need to do is visit a French tutorial site and sign up.
If you are concern about the future of your kids, one of the best things that you can do is enroll them to an online program that will help them learn French. These programs are arranged in a systematic order and you can actually get one which is intended for elementary students. Your children can start to learn elementary French inside your house whenever it is convenient for them.
Elementary French is taught the same way that elementary students are taught their lessons in school. They will be learning the different parts of speech and their right usage. Sometimes, they will be taught rhymes and songs which will make them remember the French words that were taught to them.
It is true, however, that there are elementary schools that offer French lessons. Some schools have them as part of their curriculum while some have them as special courses. The bad news is that there are areas that do not have these courses. No reason for you to be disheartened because you have the internet to turn to.
Your children can learn elementary French even with the absence of sources in your location. You need not worry anymore if you are truly determined to make them learn French.
While they are enrolled in the program, you can help them enhance their knowledge by allowing them to converse with people who also speak in French. These websites usually have online forums where they can participate and talk with other French speaking people as part of their learning process.

Immersion language courses normally involve the pupil spending time in the country of the language they wish to learn hence the term immersion as you are completly immersed in the language.

Here we will look at the alternatives

A long time ago, the best method to learn French was to spend some time directly in France, Canada or Switzerland.

Today, the Internet is a powerful way to learn French effectively, and you don’t need to spend all this money. You know, airfare, hotels, meals, etc…

You can now become fluent in French (and any other language by the way) without moving from your sweet home! How cool is that?

Let’s compare three different methods…

The first one is your local community class. There are two main disadvantages:

a. Obviously, no native speaker is present in the class..

b. it may be an expensive course

The second method to learn French is a complete immersion

Many people claim that it is the absolute best way to learn a foreign language?

I don’t think so. I’ve seen this in many countries where people speak different languages, and this doesn’t make any difference.

And very often, those who are stronger in the language spent less time in the country and speak better!

The real problem is your "teacher". If you have the right teacher, it doesn’t matter where you are located, you will speak well, no matter the language you are trying to learn.

Another method (I like it) is phone conversations with a native French speaker (via skype for example)

Bottom line is that if you are really motivated, and you have the real teacher, it doesn’t matter where you are learning French.

Let’s wrap up…

The best learn French method is the following (and it works with any language):

1. Get the right teacher

2. Motivation

If these two factors are put together, mastering the French language becomes inevitable.

Rich in history, culture and passion, with a staggering 78 million foreign tourists visiting the nation during 2006 alone, France is a fantastic country to visit, offering a broad range of activities to cater for all tastes and a perfect opportunity to practise learning the french language.

France has many distinct regions to visit each with its own unique character, such as Normandy, Loire, and Cte d’Azur to name but a few. Normandy of course is probably most famous for the D-Day landings made by the allies during World War 2 and has many interesting places to visit, such as the Caen War memorial and the towns of Bayeux and Mont-St-Michel.
Perhaps you would prefer a stay in Paris, the most romantic city in the world. Popular tourist attractions in Paris include the Eiffel Tower built between the years 1887-1889, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Musee Du Louvre featuring Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting the ‘Mona Lisa’. Or why not just enjoy a ride down the Champs-lyses.

France is home to a number of popular theme parks, the most notable being Futuroscope, Disneyland Paris and Parc Asterix. Futuroscope amusement park is located near Poitiers (300km/180 Miles south west of Paris) and features many attractions and shows to dazzle the senses. There are numerous visual experiences to enjoy on a giant IMAX screen, such as the Mystery of the Nile, Deep Sea 3D and Cyberworld. The park also features a 3D cinema, simulator experiences, restaurants and shops. Futuroscope offers a unique experience and is an excellent day out for all the family.

If you’re a history fan (or even if you’re not) you won’t want to miss out on visiting some of the fine Chteaux (Castles). With over 80 Chteaux you will surely be within easy travelling distance to some of them, whichever region you choose to stay in.

Maybe you could catch the tour de France, one of the worlds most famous and difficult cycling races, spanning over 2200 miles across many stages around the country. The 2007 Tour de France runs from Saturday 7th July to Sunday 29th July.

For cheese or wine connoisseurs then France really is your Mecca. France is one of the biggest producers of cheese, with over 400 types to choose from and is famous for producing some the world’s finest wines. How does a wine tasting trip to Bordeaux or Burgundy sound?

Learning to speak French is not easy but if you can make it entertaining you will speed up the learning process and you’ll retain more.

When you’re looking to get a good grip on the basic French language the last thing you want is to be bored. What you want is to get to learn a few things quickly. Initial success will encourage you and make you look forward to the next bit of French learning, and the next, and the next. Before you know it you’ve got a good grasp of the French language and the confidence to use it.

So what you’re probably asking now is just how fast can you learn. Of course that depends on you, and the time you can give it, but basic French language can be acquired very quickly if you’ve got the right material. There are interactive courses that boast that they can provide you with a reasonable degree of fluency in as little as eight weeks, and I have to say they’re quite right!

Modern PC-based French learning systems are a long way from the dusty old text books of my youth! Systems provided on CD or by direct download give access to huge resources. A good basic French language course will also have the benefit of a native French speaker, not that dull old teacher we used to have who would probably have rather been doing something else!

You should be able to find entertaining games for learning French words or verbs, exactly the sort of thing that makes language learning fun and if it’s fun, it’s almost always fast too. It’s pretty unlikely you’re going to get bored when you’re tested by something that reacts to you, prompts you and stretches you just a little and modern French learning can be just like that.

In addition to PC based French lessons you should also find that the best software allows you to download French audio to MP3 or CD so you’ve got lessons you can carry around with you wherever you go. With all these attributes is it any wonder you can get a grip on the basic French language so quickly?

Of course you might expect there’s a price to pay for this sort of excellent in-depth teaching. In truth there are packages to suit every pocket from just a few dollars for the very basic to the eight week course offering a money-back guarantee for under $100. That’s a truly remarkable price considering the content available.

I know some people might be put off by the thought of learning basic French language via a computer. Well don’t be. If you’re reading this article you’ve got all the skills necessary. I’m "pushing fifty" (as my dear wife reminds me) and in no way a computer expert, so if I can manage, so can you!

If you are in the exciting position of beginning to learn how to speak Japanese, this article should be

of value to you. While there are numerous reasons for wanted or needing to learn a new language, there

are even more methods of learning to speak a new language. The purpose of this article is to help you

discover which way is best for you to learn how to speak Japanese.

Before you begin choosing what program to follow, you need to decide exactly what it is you want from

the language course. One question you must ask is do you need to learn Japanese as a school requirement

or to use the language for research purposes? If so, you will need a solid reading knowledge of the

Japanese language. If you are only using the language for a vacation or a quick site seeing trip to

Japan, you must focus more on properly speaking the language and less on needing to write the language.

However, if you intend on doing business with the local Japanese people you will need to be able to

understand and communicate using the language. You also may need to be able to write business letters

and perform other written business communications.

Now that you know what level of fluency you want to reach, you must next determine which language

course is right for you? There are several different types of programs, so it’s important you find one

that best suites your situation.

If you are someone that works well on their own but wants to have some teaching support when needed,

you can look to the internet for help. There are numerous language learning sites maintained by people

wanting to help others, and they do this for free. Unfortunately the old adage is true- you get what

you pay for. These sites are good to use as resources but they are not recommended for a primary

learning source. Also, you would do well to remember that anyone can throw up a website. It would be in

your best interest to review to review the site and look for signs of quality instruction.

Apart from total immersion, the best way to learn how to speak Japanese is to invest in a program that

will give you results fast. It is essential that whatever program you choose, you want to make sure you

learn Japanese the correct way and in a style that is comfortable and supportive. This is usually

delivered in a multimedia format. While some programs just have audio lessons delivered via CD or DVD,

the most effective programs use a variety of delivery methods. The best programs will have interactive

software, native speaking voice recognition as well as games to help accelerate your learning and to

make the experience more enjoyable. One last thing to consider in your search for the best Japanese

learning software, Amazon has a myriad of language learning programs and how to speak Japanese books.

Let’s face it, if you want to learn French, you want to learn it fast. With PCs now widely accessible, learning French has never been quicker.

If you’re setting out to learn French you want to do it in the shortest time possible, right? With the least amount of difficulty. That’s only natural. Who wants to sit around leafing through dusty old French textbooks? Nobody. So if you’re looking to learn French fast there’s only one sensible solution and that’s to learn French on your computer.

For a start you’ve got the internet. It’s a huge resource for learning the French language with many sites where you can start to learn absolutely free. A lot of them provide French on MP3 clips so you can actually hear the language. That’s the way you want to learn. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not completely anti-book, but a book can’t speak. How are you going to learn French properly without knowing how it’s spoken?

Here’s an example. If I try to write down how to pronounce the French alphabet you’d get something like this: aah, bay, cay, day, euh, efah – well you can’t do much with that can you? But if I actually speak it to you, if you could actually hear my voice… I think you can see what I mean.

So learning French on your computer is definitely the way forward. The internet can not only give you French MP3s but also on a few sites, like the BBC, video clips as well. These walk you through situations like getting a cab, asking directions, ordering food. Again you’ve got the benefit of hearing spoken French and these videos bring the whole thing to life. They’re entertaining, and if you’re being entertained you learn faster because it all seems so much easier.

You will soon find that you run out of free places online to learn French. After all, most free services are just trying to get you to sign up to some kind of paid service. I don’t think there’s a problem with that, that’s business. If they didn’t get paid we probably wouldn’t have these services at all. Just take advantage of the free French lessons you can find and move on.

The thing is, if you want to continue to learn French fast you’re probably going to have to eventually put your hand in your pocket.

Learning French on your computer is still the way to go though because now we’re moving into software to learn French – and great stuff it is too!

Whether you’re five or ninety-five there’s French software that can help. There’s just as broad a rage of prices too. At the bottom end you tend to get what you pay for, and to be honest although it’s not practical for me to check them all, those I have seen don’t offer a great deal. For $20.00 I’m afraid you don’t get a great deal more that the free stuff.

However, for not a lot more (and certainly way less than a course of private French lessons) there are some amazing programs like Rocket French. This is what learning French on your computer should be like, utilizing all the abilities of your PC. It’s fun, it’s interactive, it’s got games which will provide you with a bit of a challenge and you’ve got French MP3 sound files so you can copy them to a player or a CD and continue to learn while you’re out walking around or in the car maybe.

So much as I like a good book, if you want to learn French fast, with the minimum difficulty, learn French on your computer!

In this article we’ll introduce you to the essentials of what french food has to offer to anyone who is interested to learn more about french recipes in general.

. Most people who go on holiday to France come back a few pounds heavier. These travelers lose no time telling you of the rich, fattening and sumptuous meals they enjoyed while there. They may or may not mention the fact that there are very few overweight people in this lovely country. You may well wonder, how can this paradox exist? Rich, buttery sauces and wine with every meal are bound to pack on the pounds. When these unctuous French sauces are served, they are not piled on the plate in quantities that drown the food beneath. The sauce is intended as an accent, to bring the flavors of the food to perfection. Although some of the most famous French dishes do carry more than their fair share of calories, this is not daily fare in the French household.

The French are masters of the sauce, but everyday French food is far healthier than you may have thought. French food relies on the freshest of ingredients and combinations of seasonings, refined through the centuries. French people generally shop daily for their food. The more particular French food shoppers wind their way through the marketplaces stocked with produce and meats obtained that morning from local farms. Then it’s on to the cheese shop and of course, the boulongerie – the bakery.

From now until the now until the end of this article, take the time to think about how all of this information can help you. French bakery goods are not made with bleached, highly refined flours and do not contain preservatives such as we are accustomed to finding at our grocery stores. Breads are usually baked twice daily, to be consumed that day. The French abhor waste. Any bread leftover is used for croutons, French toast – slightly different than the American version -or added to a French onion soup.

Dinner may consist of a stew, some crusty bread, with fruit and cheese for dessert. Vegetable soups and salads full of bright, fresh vegetables are other standard menu items in the everyday lineup. Food portions are not large and are eaten in courses, not served up on one plate at once.

French food is enjoyed over a period of time we might consider ridiculously long – a weekend lunch can easily last two or three hours. Conversation is an integral part of the thorough enjoyment of French food. The talk is as good as the food, with long intervals spent appreciating and digesting each dish. The custom of serving each course separately means your hot food doesn’t get cold and the salad stays crisp.

Aside from those fabulous French creations with the mouthwatering rich sauces that accompany them, typical French food is characterized by a predominance of farm-fresh vegetables, fish, poultry and always, bread. So if you think of French food as a once-a-year indulgence, try some dishes of the real French cuisine. When we are tought something new, we continue to be wiser. Therefore, learning about french food has already boosted your brain more than you know.

we can all learn a few French words but turning them into understandable phrases is the real challenge.

It’s not difficult to learn French words. Anyone can do it. Repeat the words enough to yourself and eventually they’ll stick. You could teach French words to a parrot – but it’s not language. When you want to turn words into useful sentences, into meaningful conversations, you need to learn French phrases. So what’s a French phrase? Well a good place to start would be "Bonjour, comment allez-vous" (that’s "hello, how are you?" by the way). The French are normally very polite and almost every time you meet, no matter how well you know them, French will ask "Bonjour, comment allez-vous" or, if they know you well "Bonjour, ca va?" which means the same but is more informal.

I could go on through a whole string of short French phrases, "a fait combien?" ("how much is that?"), "Pouvez-vous m’aider?" ("can you help me?"), "Excusez-moi, ou est le gare?" (excuse me, where is the station?") all of which you’ll find useful – but there isn’t room here to do any list justice and it’s not really the purpose of this article. The purpose is to point out how important it is to learn French phrases – it’s the whole basis of conversation, the difference between a set of words in a dictionary and the construction of a language. Once you get the hang of learning French phrases a world of possibilities opens up to you. Once you know how the French language is constructed it’s like having the key to a secret lock. Unlock it and you’ll be able to put your own phrases together – and that’s really what speaking French is all about.

But where do you start ? Which is the best way to learn? How can you improve your grasp on French and take your learning to a proper conversational level? Well the good news is there’s probably never been a better time to learn, or easier ways to learn. Slightly less good news is that I can’t tell which method is best for you – you’ll have to find that yourself. The great news is that there are many French courses that you can find online that offer free samples – free French lessons or short French mp3s – so you can "try before you buy" if you like. On the other hand maybe you’re the kind who learns best from a book ? If that’s you, just visit your local library and see what they’ve got. I think that eventually if you’re serious about learning French you will have to spend a little money but if you use websites and your local library you can find which method suits you best before you part with your cash.

If pushed to make a recommendation I’d say the best way to learn French phrases is in a natural speaking situation and that’s a classroom. If you’re anything like me and you thought your school days were far behind you, I have to say that I shared your lack of enthusiasm for a return to school, but to my mind it really is the best way to learn.

However, I realize it isn’t for everyone – in fact courses aren’t always available or convenient – so my second choice would be the kind of French lessons you can now download online which offer a mix of visual and spoken exercises. Speaking is the key – even if you feel a bit self-conscious about talking to your pc! Reading is good, writing down is better (there’s something about writing stuff down that reinforces learning) but speaking out loud is by far the best way to learn French phrases. You might sound a bit strange to yourself at first, but after all, there’s no point learning French if you can’t actually talk to people!
